Celebrating 30 years of the Lander Pet Connection!

Sydney Miller spent her first 40 years in New York before moving to Lander with her husband George Miller in 1973. Syd loved the outdoors, golfing, and more than anything, dogs. In retirement, she was often seen cruising around Lander with a car full of dogs, always including her Goldens. She was well known for the dog therapy services she provided to the elderly, sick, and youth, along with dog obedience classes. Syd initially started the “Dare to Care Animal League” that eventually evolved into the Lander Pet Connection (LPC), a non-profit rescue organization established in 1996.

The LPC found its home at 120 Chittim Road when the first kennel/office building was constructed in 2001. Later the Elizabeth Ennis Safety Haven was constructed in 2015, largely through donations from Jeanne O’Brien and close family to honor her niece, Elizabeth Ennis. A standalone office building was constructed in 2020 with grant funding, which allowed the main kennel/office to be used solely for managing dogs and cats. Finally, a LOR-funded Community Pantry was established at the facility in 2026.

The LPC is run under the oversight of a Board of Directors, currently consisting of 8 community members. Early on, the facility was overseen by board members as volunteers with paid onsite staff. Several board members volunteered a great deal of time at the facility, which was key to the success of the organization. Funding was eventually secured to hire a dedicated Facility Manager, which has included Marta Kasey, Ellie Fox, Hannah MacGregor, and currently Meghan Manning.

There has been a long string of community members, too numerous to mention, that over the years have dedicated time and money to keep LPC operating, and more importantly, provide a safe place for unwanted animals and help in finding their forever homes. LPC has also been instrumental in providing help to pet owners in need.

Additionally, LPC has/does work with several veterinarian organizations to provide the care and support these animals need, including but not limited to the former Wind River Veterinary Service, Dr. Lannie Hamilton, Lander Valley Animal Hospital, G Bar G Veterinary Services, Countryside Veterinary Services, and The Stock Doc.
