Director Nicholas Hytner moves the characters from the frenetic atmosphere of modern London pubs to staid government buildings, and finally to the concrete and sodium vapor streetlights of a British military installation in Cyprus. This production of Shakespeare’s tragedy and its painful exploration of human psychology focuses not on race, but on Othello’s career as a military man and his inability to understand his young wife or anything else outside his disciplined world.*
