Frontier Justice: Cattle rustling, horse thieves, shootings, and even murder all took place in Fremont County during the early pioneer period and the consequences for those committing these acts were the long arm of the county sheriff and his deputies. This was now a civilized land, and justice could often be swift and brutal. There are many stories of town folk breaking prisoners out of jail and hanging them on the spot. The sheriff and his deputies had to be ever vigilant to uphold the law.
This new exhibit at the Fremont County Pioneer Museum tells the story of the law enforcement in Fremont County, and includes a good look at the only hanging to ever occur in the county. Visitors will get a good view of the jail, the guns, the saddles, chaps, and photos of the early sheriffs. And do not forget the Information Kiosk – there is a corresponding presentation on Frontier Justice.
As the staff continues to inventory the many artifacts, cleaning and cataloging – we find more and sometimes new interesting items to upgrade and revamp exhibits. Since our opening in May 2009, we have now been able to upgrade and install 9 new exhibits to keep the museum “fresh” for the Lander community.
We look forward to seeing you at the Fremont County Pioneer Museum. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 4pm.
