Crowheart Butte Battle Celebration

The Crowheart Butte Battle Celebration has been in existence over 35 years and is a Native Cultural event recognized by the Wyoming Arts Council. It commemorates a famous battle that occurred with the Shoshone Tribe and Crow Tribe on top of the butte. This battle that the Shoshone Tribe won was over hunting rights as well as to establish the reservation boundaries for the Tribe. This powwow or celebration is to honor the ones who fought for the land and made what is according to the Treaty of 1868, the Shoshone Reservation. Many years have passed and now both tribes of the Shoshone and Northern Arapaho take part in this event as well as share its landbase. The history forever remains and with cultural events such as these it is a memorial and shared with the world. This event is one day and is going to have two grand entries. One at 1 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. A feast is being done this year and is free of charge that Pam Hereford and family are doing in memory of Wind Thunder Delphine "Del" Tarness who was tragically killed in a auto accident and a member of our small community. The public is invited to partake of this traditional Native American feed that is free and in honor of the memory of a lost loved one. Please be respectful and honor his memory at the feast. Take part in inter-tribal dancing and watch on as this community does what it has for over 35 years with contests as well in dance styles and categories. This event in the past went for 3 days but economic times has dictated for one day this year. It is still a good event and a smaller venue and is sponsored and supported by the Wind River Hotel and Casino, DTE, Wyoming Arts Council and Shoshone Rose Casino.
