Summer is winding down, but there's still plenty to do on Labor Day weekend including the 60th Annual Northern Arapaho Powwow, the ATV Poker Run and Carissa Mine Tour, the Sheep Trap Trek in Dubois, plus a rodeo in Shoshoni and Riverton.
The 60th Annual Northern Arapaho Powwow:
This Powwow will be held August 28-31 at the Arapaho Powwow Grounds on the Wind River Indian Reservation. “Wyoming’s Oldest Powwow” begins with a brown bag feast at 1 p.m. on Thursday. The 2013 Royalty are Queen- Raechelle Charley, Princess- Jazmine Wildcat and Little Chief- Nathan Arthur, Jr. The 2014 Royalty will be selected on Thursday at 7.pm. The Queen contest is open to women ages are 18-25, Princess contest ages 12-17, and Little Princess contest for girls ages 5-11. There will also be a Little Chief contest. The Grand Entry times are 7 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. There will be contest dancing in all dance categories, tiny tot through senior divisions.
Some of the dance specials scheduled during the powwow include a Grass Dance Special, Jr. Girls Jingle Dance Special, Two-Step Special, Little Chief Fancy Dance Special, and a Richard Dick “Cool Cat” Men’s Traditional Special. There will be other dance Specials that will be announced during the powwow. An Adult team dance contest will be on Saturday as well as a hand drum contest.
Along with the powwow there are other events taking place throughout the weekend. A co-ed slow pitch softball tournament will be on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for girls ages 7-12. Participants must show proof of age. For more info on the girls 3 on 3, contact Theron Dewey, Jr at (307)389-8758. Sunday’s events include a 5k fun run/walk beginning at 8 a.m., a Horse Shoe Tournament with no entry fee (singles and doubles) at 9 a.m. and a parade at 10 a.m. followed by youth activities and games. Also on Sunday, there is a Community Feast at 1 p.m.
This year’s MCs include William J. C’Hair, Rupert “Ducky” Goggles, Al Bell and Charlie Manderson. Arena Directors are Lionel Bell, Ethan Fighting Bear, C.J. Walker and Mick Spoonhunter. Honor Drum is the Arapaho Eagle Drum. A host and visiting drum will be chosen daily. There is limited vendor space available. For vendor information contact Cassie Soldier Wolf at (307)240-0963. Run for the Gold: ATV Poker Run and Mine Tour
Try your hand at a different kind of poker run & help the Friends of South Pass support restoration at South Pass City and the Carissa Mine on August 31.
ATV Poker Run & Mine Tour is a chance to learn about the rich history of mining in the Sweetwater Mining District, have a great day with the family, and cover some serious ground & win a bit of cash. The run is open to ATVs and 4x4s, and run will include guided tours of historic gold mining sites near South Pass City as well as a tour of the Carissa Mine.

Dubois Sheep Trap Trek
Sheep Trap Trek – August 30, 9am – 4pm Meet at the Dubois Museum, West Ramshorn Street, 9 a.m. for a free hike to an ancient Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep trap used by the Sheep Eaters in the foothills of the Wind River Mountain range. Participants will carpool to the trailhead. This hike will be at over 8,000 feet in elevation, and even though the hike is short, it involves a steep uphill walk.
