About Us

NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) is a nonprofit global wilderness school that supports thousands of students each year all over the world.  Our school began in a small cabin in Sinks Canyon, Wyoming in 1965 as the National Outdoor Leadership School. At that time, we were primarily an outdoors skills school, doing our work in local mountain ranges and exploring what it meant to teach leadership in the backcountry. Today, we are NOLS, a multifaceted wilderness school headquartered in Lander, Wyoming with locations in seven U.S. states and six countries, that supports thousands of students each year all over the world in both field & classroom courses.

 

Objective

Contribute to all aspects of the NOLS Rocky Mountain rations (field food) department. Provide nutritious food to courses and the public. Aid in educating on basic nutrition, meal planning and on the NOLS bulk rationing system.

 

Qualifications 

  • Effective organizational and communication skills.

  • Strong work ethic with high attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively on a team, delegate appropriately, and complete tasks independently.

  • Positive, friendly approach to student-service.

  • Ability to work flexible and irregular hours, including weekends, with a goal of maintaining a 40-hour work week.

 

Preferred Skills

  • Familiar with the Google Suite (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets).

  • Able to lift and carry 50 pounds.

  • Able to work while standing for extended periods of time.

  • Familiar with the philosophy of bulk field rations, cooking, and/ or knowledge of nutrition.

 

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations in the rations department.

  • Place food orders, maintain inventory, and monitor food costs. Oversee delivery and processing of orders including stocking and inventory management. 

  • Responsible for the accounting of $380K in food inventory and $80K in food sales revenue. 

  • Reconcile daily cash register receipts.

  • Assist in hiring, training, and supervising seasonal employees.

  • Assist in planning for and issuing bulk food to NOLS courses. 

  • Brief field faculty and students on their course ration preparations.

  • Assist the public, instructors, and students with food purchases.

  • Bag, divide, and pack course rations and re-rations.

  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and sanitary rations facility.

  • Provide timely and growth-oriented feedback to team.

Position Details

This is a full-time, benefitted, year-round position with the potential for NOLS field or classroom teaching.
