About Us

NOLS was founded in 1965 and, at that time, NOLS “world headquarters'' was a tiny log cabin at the entrance to Sinks Canyon State Park. That cabin still exists although NOLS has long since outgrown it. Today’s NOLS is an international nonprofit organization that teaches wilderness-based skills with a mission to be the leading source and teacher of wilderness skills and leadership that serve people and the environment. NOLS supports the realistic needs of remote work, and this role can potentially be based remotely, although Lander-based is preferred and visits to our headquarters office will be necessary.

Objective

NOLS has embarked on a multi-year digital transformation modernizing the applications and tools supporting the school. With a focus on facilitating the engagement and support of NOLS alumni and philanthropic prospects and donors, this role is responsible for data governance supporting the Advancement department in the Microsoft Dynamics 365 environment. The Business Systems and Data Analyst oversees the day-to-day and long-term management of the NOLS philanthropic applications and data repositories,  ensuring  quality, consistency, and accuracy, working closely with Information Technology to define and enhance NOLS school-wide common data elements as well as Advancement specific data needs. This role requires acute attention to detail, understanding of best practices related to fundraising data, and the ability to be innovative and proactive in all related use of technology, systems, and data. Additionally, this role will supervise the data technician, oversee the creation and implementation of training for the Advancement department staff, plus play a role in database and website integration, and payment portal management to help maximize fundraising revenue, communication impact, and outreach. 

 

Qualifications 

  • 5+ years in a similar role preferably with a non-profit or educational institution

  • Experience with Dynamics 365 Sales Enablement (CRM) or other similar fundraising platforms such as SalesForce and Raiser’s Edge 

  • Experience with PowerBI or similar tool

  • Experience developing user documentation and training materials

  • Experience developing requirements and performing validation testing

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills with the ability to work with both technical and non-technical users to break down complex topics and communicate simply to a variety of stakeholders

  • Aptitude for complex problem solving, and desire to produce creative solutions

  • Capability to backward map to ensure adherence to deadlines for deliverables

  • Advanced analytical organizational skills and attention to detail.

 

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to develop reports and dashboards using tools such as PowerBI, Tableau, or similar.

  • Familiarity with creating Dashboards and Views within a CRM platform.

  • Familiarity with data needs and functionality for robust nonprofit fundraising and advancement programs.

 

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the effective management and maintenance of Advancement data within the NOLS ecosystem.

  • Maintains the overall integrity and quality of the Advancement systems and data, including routine data improvement, data auditing, systems check, and database functions.

  • Identifies, prioritizes, and collaborates with the IT team to facilitate development and implementation of new/improved system and data functionality in support of existing and/or new Advancement activities.

  • In accordance with best practice and in consultation with other team members, develops and implements policies, procedures, standards, and templates for effective use of systems and data.

  • Develops procedures to ensure data integrity and quality.

  • Establishes and implements position-based protocols for system/data access, entry, and download.

  • Monitors compliance with all processes and procedures and takes corrective action when necessary. Provides assistance to users as needed to ensure accurate and efficient data access, entry, and download.

  • Develops position-specific training curricula and ensures all users are adequately trained.

  • Reconciles data alignment and accuracy with other data elements and NOLS common data elements as needed.

  • Maintains and analyzes philanthropic data to support fundraising campaigns and reconciliation of financial records.

  • Supports Advancement team to identify and research prospects, track and classify donors, and properly process and acknowledge receipt of gifts.

  • Assesses the value and functionality of third-party advancement related data sources for potential integration.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional associations/societies.

  • Uses good judgment in dealing with confidential information.

 

Work Location and Compensation

Work location is flexible and travel to NOLS HQ in Lander, WY will be required, more frequently during the database migration phase in 2022. Preferred locations for remote employees are cities and states where travel to Lander is more easily accessible, e.g. Denver, CO or Salt Lake City, UT.
