NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) is a nonprofit wilderness and leadership school, founded in 1965, that supports thousands of students each year all over the world. Our global  headquarters is in Lander, Wyoming with campuses in seven U.S. states and six countries.

 

NOLS’ Expedition Operations division holds the functions that support the school’s field programs, from student enrollment and business-to-business relationships, to education and curriculum, to faculty development and staffing, and the teams on the ground that execute field programs from our 12 campuses across the globe.

 

Objective

In this role you will work with the associate director of expedition operations to provide leadership, structure, support, financial oversight and strategic vision for the 12 campuses that execute NOLS’ expeditionary field programs. You will contribute to division-wide leadership for field operations ensuring effective collaboration among our campuses and departments and also across the school to ensure excellent programs grounded in the NOLS mission. 

 

Qualifications 

  • Commitment to NOLS’ educational philosophy, mission, and values

  • Experience supervising expeditionary field programs

  • Track record of building positive leadership environments that embody equity and inclusion for diverse teams

  • Experience with organizational leadership and managing multi-functional teams

  • History of supervision that balances flexible problem solving with effective and situationally-appropriate decision making in support of shared goals

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, in public forums and one-on-one, with a variety of audiences

  • Must thrive on the challenge of remote supervision as a transformational, capacity-building endeavor

  • Able to work independently and lead under stress

  • Interest and experience in working collaboratively 

  • Experience creating and managing budgets

 

Experience with programs outside the U.S. and Spanish language skills are not required but would add value to our team.

 

Responsibilities

80% Campus operations leadership

  • Supervise the directors and/or managers responsible for up to eight campus locations in support of exceptional student experiences, schoolwide excellence, and efficiency. Campus directors and managers are responsible for: field instructor team supervision;  in-town staff supervision, training, and development; public policy interaction; risk management; budget planning and execution; facilities; business compliance; and new program development. 

  • Conduct risk management, financial, and legal audits of NOLS campus operations to assess function of critical systems and recommend changes. 

  • Foster collaboration across locations and operations departments that support program delivery such as risk management, field staffing, and education.

 

10% Emergency and crisis support

  • Respond to field emergencies and other situations, including support of campus directors and program staff; and contact with families, land managers, media, and other audiences.

  • May serve as a member of the NOLS Crisis Management Team 

 

5% School-wide leadership

  • Build and maintain relationships with other NOLS departments and teams. 

  • Represent Expedition Operations on inter-departmental working groups to exchange knowledge, support, and enhance the school’s overall program and mission. 

  • Communicate NOLS’ vision and state of the school with staff. 

  • Work with other directors to develop and implement school-wide initiatives

 

5% Other

  • Conduct other special projects and perform other duties as assigned by the associate director of operations

Work Location and Compensation

This position could be remote, but would require monthly or bi-monthly, in-person site visits to NOLS World Headquarters, including two extended visits annually for planning and evaluation cycles with director teams. Four to six weeks per year of additional travel to NOLS campus locations is also required.

Pre-Employment Check

  • A criminal background check is required from all NOLS employees.
