About Us

NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) is a nonprofit global wilderness school that supports thousands of students each year all over the world.  Our school began in a small cabin in Sinks Canyon, Wyoming in 1965 as the National Outdoor Leadership School. At that time, we were primarily an outdoors skills school, doing our work in local mountain ranges and exploring what it meant to teach leadership in the backcountry. Today, we are NOLS, a multifaceted wilderness school headquartered in Lander, Wyoming with locations in seven U.S. states and six countries, that supports thousands of students each year all over the world in both field & classroom courses.



As part of a team, the NOLS Custom Education Account Associate supports Custom Education client services, including managing course logistics and supporting client relationships in conjunction with Account Managers for all NOLS Custom Education courses for which they are responsible.



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be able to present a vibrant, positive and helpful attitude to a variety of diverse inquiries, whether in person, email, or over the phone.

  • Must be proficient with computer programs used to create student portals, manage the student enrollment process, and track progress for course logistics. 

  • Ability to balance being a member of a fast-paced, dynamic team while also remaining self-directed, seeking feedback, articulating needs, and maintaining a high degree of ownership and responsibility.

  • Ability to prioritize, then manage both short-term needs and long-term visions in executing a successful course.


Preferred skills

  • Knowledge of NOLS course offerings, campuses, and mission.

  • Understanding of Google suite, HelpScout, and Hubspot.


Leadership or Supervisory Duties: The Account Associate role requires strong cooperation and collaboration skills. The Account Associate works closely with a variety of NOLS team members, in addition to external businesses and other partners, to support courses running smoothly.. NOLS Custom Education is a team-oriented atmosphere.


Funds and/or Property: Responsible for purchases made via NOLS credit card, including operating expenses and supplies related to course needs. Will occasionally assist in the processing of funds associated with student tuition monies. Indirectly responsible for a significant amount of department annual revenue.



  • 30% Works closely with Account Managers to support new and ongoing client relationships, including course paperwork, logistics, and programming for assigned courses. Coordinates unique course logistics and communicates those with various NOLS departments and campuses, including nuances surrounding equipment needs, rations, student travel, and other specific student needs. Assists in the logistics preparation for remote NOLS Custom Education courses, Leave No Trace courses, Leadership Navigation Challenges, and Risk Management Trainings, including: packing rations and equipment, making travel plans, and vendor communication.  

  • 25% Oversees enrollment progress on multiple course rosters. Maintains current and accurate information on enrollment progress in the internal NOLS database as well as on communication shared with clients. Assists students in changing their student status: course transfers, cancellations, enrollment from waitlists, available openings, etc. 

  • 25% Assists with communication for current and prospective students, families, and clients, through phone and email, sending pre-course information, and answering questions pertinent to the NOLS Custom Education program, equipment, course prospects, tuition, etc. Also supports sharing this information through hosting pre-course webinars for students.

  • 10% Answers and provides general information on NOLS Custom Education in response to telephone, mail, email, and website inquiries including program capabilities, retail transactions, and frequently asked questions.

  • 5% Assist other NOLS Custom Education staff and NOLS Expeditions Admissions staff in a variety of capacities. Executes administrative tasks related to specific course responsibilities.

  • 5% Other duties as assigned. 

  • This position has flexibility for field work and classroom teaching in the range of 2-8 weeks per year, approved on a case by case basis, depending on performance, schedule, and workload.

Work Location and Compensation

This position can be based at the NOLS Headquarters in Lander, WY. If a remote option is offered, you must be a legal resident of: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming. This is a full-time regular role with a starting wage of $17.00/hour.  


Lander is a small mountain town in the foothills of Wyoming’s Wind River Range on territory traditionally used by indigenous people, including the Northern Arapaho, Eastern Shoshone, Cheyenne, Bannock, and Crow.  Lander offers immediate access to public lands for climbing, cycling, fishing, hiking, hunting, skiing, and more.
