NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) is a nonprofit global wilderness school that supports thousands of students each year all over the world. Our school began in a small cabin in Sinks Canyon, Wyoming in 1965 as the National Outdoor Leadership School. At that time, we were primarily an outdoors skills school, doing our work in local mountain ranges and exploring what it meant to teach leadership in the backcountry. Today, we are NOLS, a multifaceted wilderness school located in Lander, Wyoming, that supports thousands of students each year all over the world in both field & classroom courses.
The Network Engineer will provide network engineering operational support and development for a broad range of network systems and environments including the full system engineering lifecycle, and requirements analysis: configure, test, evaluation, maintain, integration, test, and install. This individual will primarily be focused on network and security technologies, operational support, and projects that impact cross-functional aspects of the school. This position will also require the evaluation, recommendation and implementation of current and emerging networking security technologies, products and services to take NOLS to the next level in meeting and advancing business and financial goals. This position reports to the Senior Network Engineer.
End User Support
Providing daily Tier 2 and Tier 3 user support including coordination of problem resolution
Participating in on-call Tier 1-3 production support activities based upon documented support procedures.
Managing team’s service and infrastructure requests on a daily basis, ensuring completion and proper adherence to our standards and practices.
Providing incident troubleshooting on network and security technology related issues.
Campus Support
Liaise, coordinate and work with site contacts (local and international) of different business units to develop the engineering design to support the business projects/initiatives and operational requirements/performance.
Implementing and supporting network engineering & security solutions of organization’s LAN, WAN, WLAN, Cloud and Network Security focused infrastructure projects. Projects include coordinating the configuring, implementing and troubleshooting multi-vendor network security devices, cabling systems, switches, routers, firewalls, web content filters, VPN (client & Site-to-Site) and other network related instrumentation.
Providing network support in the design, integration, and deployment and troubleshooting of enterprise implementations.
Maintenance
Maximizing network performance by monitoring performance; troubleshooting network problems and outages; scheduling upgrades; collaborating with network engineers on network optimization.
Proactively implementing procedures to prevent and minimize the severity of outages, under the guidance of Sr. Engineers or Architects.
Maintaining policies and configuration of switches, routers and firewalls
Developing and implementing improvements for ACLs, routing, and firewall rules
Maintaining network hardware and appliances, including access points and network drops, across all domestic and international locations
Working with regional contractors to build and repair fiber and wireless infrastructure
Running security scans and building reports for actionable items ordered on criticality
Maintaining and auditing cloud and local DDI resources
Preparing, maintaining and creating network documentation (diagram, process, standard operating procedures) and administration of network systems.
Analyzing system and/or network performance, modifying parameters to improve throughput and effectively utilize resources. Monitor resource usage and make adjustments as needed.
Participating as a team member on network and security development enterprise projects.
Pro-actively seeks out on the job training or educational opportunities from senior resources to increase both technical and professional skills
Other
Participating in data governance and change management processes at NOLS as required
Staying informed of new features and functionality available in NOLS’ technical tools
May be asked to travel up to 25% of the time to NOLS locations around the world
An Associate's degree (or higher) in computer science, management information systems, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience is required.
Five (5) or more years of professional experience as a Network Engineer preferably in the education / non-profit industry.
Enthusiasm for and ability to connect with a wide variety of individuals.

Technical Qualifications
Strong scripting abilities in Bash and familiarity with the leading CLI interfaces for network equipment
Significant hands-on experience with interconnected systems
Ability to manage complex configurations with vi/vim, NMS solutions, CLI.
Advanced understanding of network protocols such as DHCP, DNS, ARP, ERP, BGP, IGMP, OSPF, etc.
Advanced understanding of loop and redundancy protocols, VRRP, LACP, ISC, LAG/MLAG.
Thorough understanding of network security best practices and tools.
Advanced understanding of networking and VoIP telephony.
Proven ability to use ticketing and asset management systems.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair all network devices and appliances, switches, routers, access points, and firewalls.
Familiarity with interconnect and interface standards, specifications, and usage scenarios.
Ability to splice fiber with a fusion splicer or mechanical splices.
Structured cabling experience with cat5-6, multi/single mode fiber, splices and terminations.
Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate experience in the following technologies:
Advanced network security layers 1-7
Palo Alto Panorama, WildFire, Threat Detection, etc.
Extreme Networks Switching and Wireless
Juniper Junos and derivatives CLI usage
